World’s Longest-Serving Bat Boy Has been At It For fifty-five Years (And Counting).

A University of Memphis takes the definition of 'bat boy' to a ridiculous extreme. Here's Stan Bronson Jr., 84, who has been at work for the Tigers' baseball team since 1958. Yep, he's celebrating 55 years for the reason that team's bat boy, which makes him that longest-serving person in that position on the earth, ever. The Guinness E book of World Records shows so, so it has to be true.

During Bronson's primary season as bat boy at Memphis, Stan Musial and Ted Williams were playing inside major leagues. The Russians introduced Sputnik 1 that 365 days. Chess champion Bobby Fischer was 14 years old. You get the theory.

Bronson, who has a learning disability, mild palsy in addition to a speech impediment, has never been paid through the University. His medical needs are dealt with by the team trainers, he has a lifetime pass for the university cafeteria, and her late mother, Irma, left him the family house in a rely on.

"I remember his mother telling us on one occasion, that when Stan was an awfully young child, that the family physician told her that Stan's endurance would be eight and nine years, " stated [Memphis associate athletic movie director Bob] Winn. "We imagine, really, quite frankly, that athletics has kept Stan in existence and going. "

Within the interview recently on NPR, Bronson said which he came to Memphis within 1958 after being fired through the athletics department at Rhodes University or college.

"Coach Murphy tells the story that Stan talked about, 'I need a career, '" recounted longtime Memphis partner athletic director Bob Winn. "Coach Murphy stated, 'Well, son, I'm sorry but I don't have profit my budget to pay extra for anybody else. And Stan talked about, 'Don't need money. Have to have a job. '"

Inspiring account and all, but shouldn't the university have been paying him something along the way? Last year the team held a fundraiser that will help with Bronson's future medical costs (he lacks the medical insurance, and is not really on social security, since he's never worked). And additionally recently they retired their number.
