Dave Matthews joined West Bromwich Albion in January 1961 and spent over 50 years at the club. Dave, who died at the weekend, aged 66, found a minimum of two dozen managers at The Hawthorns. And in his 50 years at the club, countless people have proved for the Baggies. He was on first name terms with the kind of the legendary Jeff Astle and Tony Brown, Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham, Bryan Robson and big Ron Atkinson to name just a few. And mixing using them and 1000s of West Brom fans made him a story himself. Dave died at his house in Halesowen on Sunday night, abandoning wife, Carol and kids Clare and Alison. Albion may mark his death with a one-minute silence before Saturdayas fitting with Newcastle at The Hawthorns a' the ground where he had worked up until this past year since 1961. Britain supremo Roy Hodgson worked along with Matthews all through his final year of the extraordinary 51-year period. He said: "I was very unhappy to hear of Daveas passing. "He was a well liked, loved and respected figure at West Bromwich Albion right up until his retirement this past year. "Daveas devotion and dedication to the club - an amazing 51 years - was famous. "My sympathies go to his family and friends only at that time. AHe will be missed by everyone at the club." Baggies Sporting & Technical Director Richard Garlick added: aEveryone at the club is saddened and seriously shocked to understand of Daveas passing. aDave made many friends during his many yearsa service with West Bromwich Albion, many of whom still work here. aEveryoneas ideas are extremely much together with his family and friends at this hard time.a Mr Matthews fought a with cancer and was later diagnosed with a rare heart condition. But his sudden death came as a surprise to those close by, as only recently he had told friends and family that he was feeling as good as ever. Chairman of West Bromwich Albion Supporters Club, John Homer, who was also a close friend said: aI may stay here throughout the day and I wouldnat manage to get the words to express how much I considered him.a Born in Smethwick, the life-long Albion lover started as a groundsman before getting the clubas kitman. His 50th anniversary is celebrated by dave Matthews at West Brom in 2011. He accumulated over 2,000 games and worked with 24 different administrators a' lots of whom he remained friends with. Matthews witnessed FA Cup and League Cup triumphs along with six promotions all through his tenure in the Black Country. He was very favored by the present and past people, fans, editors and other workers at the club. When over 360 people attended, including 60 former people a mark of the person was calculated at his sell-out 50th anniversary dinner a year ago.
